Private Lessons
Traditionally, yoga was taught one-on-one. Private lessons provide a setting in which your individuality can be completely addressed. Yoga postures and breathing exercises are selectively chosen and developed to meet your specific needs. Learning and practicing postures and breathing exercises at your own pace and within your own range is the most effective way to realize the benefits of yoga.
If you are not comfortable with attending group classes, have a desire to work to deepen your practice and knowledge of yoga (postures and breathing exercises,) or if you desire a setting in which your individuality can be completely addressed, private lessons may be ideal for you. Private lessons are a great way to quickly learn the foundations for this life-changing practice, and are also a great compliment to group lessons. Private lessons are usually an hour in length, and the focus is based on the student’s topics of interest.
Attentively guided by verbal instruction, imagery, demonstration, and hands-on direction, you will explore yoga in a way that is practical and beneficial. True strength, endurance, and range of motion are developed incrementally and gradually, not by force. Through an approach that is gradual and gentle, you will experience how the subtle power of yoga works with all aspects of your being — physical, psychological, and spiritual. Rediscover and enjoy your natural strength, suppleness, vigor, and health through yoga developed specifically for you.
Hope’s approach to teaching yoga guides each person in developing a practice that is relevant to his or her own body and life experience. Most importantly, she teaches you to work with your body by being responsive to the signals of your body in the present.

Look to the Horizon with Hope – Gentle Yoga for Cancer and Chronic Illness
Reconnecting Body, Mind and Spirit
The benefits of yoga have been studied in numerous populations including cancer patients and survivors and people with chronic illness. There have been many positive outcomes from these studies, including lowered stress levels, better quality sleep, lowered levels of anxiety and depression, and overall quality of life.
There are many aspects of yoga practice that can support those dealing with physical, emotional, and spiritual challenges that accompany a serious illness. Practicing postures helps restore and strengthen physical functioning while breathing exercises help to relax the body and still the mind. Meditation enables individuals to better connect with their spiritual selves while reversing the negative effects of stress.
Hope teaches an adaptive yoga practice that uses awareness, breath, movement, and relaxation to create an opportunity for repair and rejuvenation so that all systems in the body can come into balance. Classes start with relaxation, and continue with a check-in and sharing, giving group members a chance to connect with others. This connection, community, and relationship is an important part of our time together and to the overall healing process. We move into breathing practices and into a gentle asana practice, ending with relaxation and sometimes creative visualization. There is an educational component each week as well, helping the participants to better understand the different aspects of yoga.
Managing one’s illness can be a difficult, demanding task. Recovering and moving on after illness can present unique challenges. Even with consistent support from family and friends, each day can be a struggle. Yoga can give those who practice a moment of ease, of joy, and of well-being allowing the energy inside of us to grow, to heal and to bring us back to a place of wholeness, of peace.
